2 dead in D.C. suburb shooting; person of interest detained in N.J.

A person of interest has been detained in New Jersey following a fatal double shooting in a Washington D.C. suburb.

Officers were called to a home in Manassas, Va. around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning for a welfare check and found an adult man and adult woman shot to death in the basement, according to the Prince William County Police Department. Their identities have not been released pending notification of their next-of-kin.

A person of interest, who has also not been identified but who officials believe knew the deceased individuals, was later detained in Brunswick, New Jersey — about 230 miles northeast — but no charges have been filed.

A woman told NBC 4 Washington she was the daughter of one of the victims and that her mother was renting the basement with her husband from the homeowners.

“Detectives are actively investigating the incident to determine what led up to the shooting and are seeking to speak with anyone who has information to aid in the investigation,” the department said in a news release.

Neighbors were unaware the shooting had occurred and startled.

“Without knowing all the details on what happened yet, your mind’s just wondering [about] what’s going on,” Michael Von Gersdorff told NBC 4 Washington.
