3 keys to a Jets upset vs. the Bills on Monday Night Football

GET PRESSURE ON ALLEN

The Jets have defeated the Bills the last two years at MetLife Stadium, and that is not by accident. Gang Green’s defense finished with five sacks in each contest and consistently pressured Bills QB Josh Allen. This week, the defensive game plan against the Bills has to be the same. Allen is one of the best QBs in the league, and the Jets’ defensive line can’t just let him stand around and use his legs to give his receivers time to get open. The Jets have averaged 2.3 sacks per game in their three losses to the 49ers, Broncos and Vikings. In their two wins, they have averaged 5.5 sacks.

ESTABLISH RUN GAME EARLY

Gang Green is currently the worst team in the league when it comes to running the ball. Breece Hall has rushed for just 197 yards and the Jets are averaging just 80.4 yards on the ground. Because of that, a lot of pressure has been squarely on Aaron Rodgers‘ shoulders. In the loss against the Vikings, Rodgers threw the ball 54 times and finished with three interceptions. With Rodgers less than 100% (low ankle sprain), the Jets must get Hall and rookie RB Braelon Allen involved early. Buffalo’s defense allows 144 rushing yards per game, so there should be opportunities for the Jets to take advantage.

CONTAIN THE GROUND ATTACK

The Jets’ defensive weakness has been stopping the run, an area the Bills will look to exploit again. In Joe Brady’s debut as offensive coordinator, the Bills rushed for 130 yards on the ground during their 32-6 victory against the Jets last November. That success rushing the ball helped Allen pass for 275 yards and three touchdowns. With Bills RB James Cook (toe) questionable for Monday’s game, ex-Jet Ty Johnson could receive a lot of touches on Monday night.
