Man killed, at least 9 people wounded in shooting near Tennessee State University

A man was killed and at least nine people wounded in a shooting Saturday evening near a Tennessee State University homecoming event in Nashville.

Cops said three children — two 12-year-olds and a 14-year-old — were among the nine wounded and that all the survivors are expected to recover. The name of the 24-year-old man who died was not immediately released.

Two suspects were still on the loose Sunday, according to local ABC affiliate WKRN. Authorities said they believe some of the wounded victims are also potential suspects.

The shooting occurred near an event for Tennessee State University’s annual homecoming celebration but the shooters were not directly connected to the university, according to police.

Metro Nashville Police Commander Anthony McClain, a Tennessee State alum, called it “kind of a side bar to the celebration.”

“It’s unfortunate that a few folks ruined it for everybody,” McClain said. “We have to come to a point to stop this violence.”

When gunfire erupted around 5 p.m. Saturday cops were already in the area providing security for the homecoming celebration, authorities said. The shooting started after an argument between two groups, according to police.

“There’s no indication of any gang relation,” Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said. “It was two groups of people who were beefing and they opened fire on each other with a crowd around.”

While the Tennessee State homecoming celebration occurred near campus, the corresponding football game was played about three miles away in the Tennessee Titans’ home stadium. The game was not affected by the shooting and Tennessee State beat Eastern Illinois 41-17.
