Clean your washing machine with cheap and easy DIY method to stop nasty odours from mould

Recent research from Tap Warehouse highlights that many Brits are searching for effective methods to maintain their appliances.

By analysing online searches starting with “how to clean,” they identified the most pressing concerns among homeowners.

Washing machines topped the list of cleaning-related searches, and it makes sense, as it’s essential to preventing unpleasant odours and ensuring your laundry comes out clean.

Often, dirt, hair, and bacteria can accumulate in the drum, rubber gasket, and detergent dispenser of your washing machine.

This buildup can lead to mould and mildew, resulting in musty smells that can affect your laundry’s freshness.

To tackle this issue, Nancy Emery, the in-house cleaning expert at Tap Warehouse, shared an affordable solution that involves common household ingredients you probably already have.

Nancy recommends a simple yet effective method to deep-clean the appliance, using a combination of essential oil and vinegar to cut through grime and eliminate bacteria.

Speaking on the dreaded issue of bad odours, she said: “To combat this, add around 10 drops of essential oil like lavender to two cups of white vinegar and pour this into your detergent dispenser on a hot cycle. Then add half a cup of baking soda and begin another hot cycle.

“This will effectively kill bacteria and cut through grime.” As an extra step, the cleaning pro added: “It’s also worth cleaning the filter on a monthly basis to stop dirt from clogging up your washing machine.

“Ensure the machine is switched off and unplugged before removing the filter and then use a soft-bristled brush to remove any debris and then secure it back in place once done.”

Finally, to maintain the longevity of your machine and prevent foul smells, the expert suggests leaving your washing machine door open after each wash.
