The beautiful Greek island as pretty as Crete or Corfu with virtually no tourists

It’s the little-known gem boasting world-class beaches and secluded coves – but Kimolos is often overlooked in favour of more crowded tourist hotspots.

Boasting a mix of sandy and pebbled shores, the Greek island is perfect for those seeking tranquility away from the busy streets of Crete or Corfu. Located just 900 meters from the more famous Milos, Kimolos has traditionally been a retreat for only the most in-the-know Greek holidaymakers.

Recently, however, more international tourists have begun discovering its charm.

Connected to Milos by an array of water taxis and also accessible by ferry from Santorini, Kimolos arguably offers a more authentic slice of island life. It has a population of less than 1,000 residents, most of which live in the village of Chorio.

The name Kimolos itself derives from “kimolia” – Greek for chalk – and the small island is deeply rooted in tradition. Farming and fishing remain mainstays and its volcanic soil is rich in minerals due to a chalk-mining history.

Like other Cycladic islands, Kimolos also features iconic whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets. Its sun-drenched, peaceful atmosphere draws in visitors in search of a slower pace.

But it still has very few tourists when compared with its more well-known cousins. October temperatures average from a pleasant 22C by day to a cooler 19C by night.

That’s perfect weather to explore Prassa Beach on the island’s northeastern coast. The stretch has been hailed by US travel agency Florida Panhandle as having the clearest water in the world.

After you’ve dried off you can explore quaint tavernas and traditional Greek hospitality. Kampos Square is a popular spot to enjoy fresh fish, Greek salads and local cheese pies known as tyrenies.
