Jets Mailbag: Odds of a Davante Adams trade; How hot is Robert Saleh’s seat?

There is never a dull moment with the Jets.

Following their 10-9 loss to the Broncos last Sunday, the Jets have been in the news for various reasons this week. Some of that is speculation the Jets could acquire wide receiver Davante Adams in a trade after he requested the Raiders trade him.

Jets coach Robert Saleh also refused to discuss Garrett Wilson’s comments about his route tree changing this season. Nevertheless, the Jets (2-2) have an important game this Sunday against the Vikings (4-0) in London.

Before then, let’s answer a few questions in this week’s mailbag.

What do you think the chances are that the Jets trade for Davante Adams? — @nyjetsfanmike

I won’t put a percentage on it, but I believe the chances are pretty high that the Jets will acquire Adams. He reportedly wants to be traded to the Jets, and I know the Jets are interested in him.

A year ago, even after Aaron Rodgers suffered his season-ending Achilles injury, the Jets inquired about Adams’ availability with the Raiders. However, Las Vegas told the team they were not moving the three-time All-Pro.

Now, the situation has changed. It doesn’t appear Raiders coach Antonio Pierce and Adams are on the same page, especially after Pierce reportedly liked a post that the receiver may have already played his last snap with the Raiders.

In addition to the Jets, the Saints are also high on Adams’ trade wish list because of his relationship with Derek Carr, whom he played with at Fresno State, and with the Raiders in 2022. The Bills don’t have the salary cap space currently, but you would have to think they would love nothing more than to keep Adams away from Rodgers and the Jets.

Nothing is imminent because Adams has a legit hamstring injury right now. Depending on how long that lasts, that could stall any potential Adams trade for a week or longer.

Does Saleh get fired in season if the Jets record is 2-5? — @JETSFAN139

No matter what happens in October, I highly doubt Saleh would be fired midseason. First, Jets owner Woody Johnson doesn’t have a history of firing coaches during the season.

In 2020, the Jets went 2-14 and Johnson waited hours after the team’s season finale to fire then-coach Adam Gase. Also, I don’t know if firing Saleh would accomplish anything.

The Jets’ offense has been inconsistent through four games, and firing Saleh wouldn’t change that because Rodgers would still be the quarterback, and Nathaniel Hackett would still run the offense. Many fans have called for Saleh’s job after the embarrassing loss to the Broncos, but I would not hold my breath even if the Jets went 0-5 in October.

What is your number one issue that MUST be fixed ASAP? — @bingusbungus_2

There are several issues I believe the Jets need to change right now, but the run block is the highest on my list. Entering the season, the Jets thought their rushing attack would be a strength, but that certainly hasn’t been the case so far.

Currently, the Jets rank 27th in rushing (91.5 per game). Breece Hall doesn’t look like the guy some expected to be among the league leaders in rushing yardage. Part of that has to do with the way the Jets have — or haven’t — blocked in the trenches.

If Hall, rookie Braelon Allen, and the Jets’ running game can get going, that could unlock a lot in their passing game. It would also take a lot of pressure off Rodgers and a passing game that is still trying to find chemistry.

So how hot is Nathaniel Hackett’s seat right now, and in your opinion, should the Jets part ways with him? If so, when might it happen? — @MrEd315

Jets fans have been calling for Hackett’s job since last season. But if Rodgers wants Hackett to be with the Jets, he isn’t going anywhere. I will say the Jets’ playcalling needs to be better, especially during critical downs.

You can’t run a fade route pass play to Solomon Thomas when you are at the one-yard line. Also, why not use Allen, a power running back who loves to run North and South to get a touchdown?

Fans hoping for an offensive coordinator change will just have to hope the Jets’ offense improves throughout the season.
