Search underway for elderly inmate who escaped from Massachusetts prison

Police in Massachusetts are searching for an elderly inmate who escaped from prison Tuesday morning.

The inmate, 72-year-old Kevin Michael O’Brien, walked away from the minimum-security, pre-release Pondville Correctional Center in Norfolk around 9:30 a.m., Walpole police said.

His absence wasn’t noticed until around 11 a.m. when staff were conducting a routine check. Video reviewed by investigators showed him walking into a wooded area less than two hours earlier.

It’s unknown where he was headed but multiple confirmed sightings have been reported. Norfolk is about 31 miles south of Boston.

O’Brien is described as 5’7″ tall and weighing 160 lbs. “with a stocky build, blue eyes and white hair.”

He was last seen wearing a baseball cap, black glasses, a black windbreaker, blue jeans and white sneakers.

O’Brien was serving a sentence for motor vehicle theft, according to WCVB.

“Please do not approach O’Brien. We ask anyone with information to call 911,” the Massachusetts Department of Correction said.
