Giants work out veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard, five receivers, two defensive backs with Seahawks on deck

The Giants worked out veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard, five young wide receivers and two defensive backs on Monday, including journeyman former Jet Lamar Jackson. Two of the skill players have returned punts in an NFL game, as well.

Beathard, 30, gave the Giants a live arm for their workout of so many receivers. Still, it was interesting that he officially worked out for the team given the presence of three QBs already on New York’s roster in Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito.

It also stood out that the Giants worked out so many receivers with No. 1 target Malik Nabers coming off a concussion in last Thursday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The first real update on Nabers will come when the team returns to practice on Wednesday.

On Monday, everyone had to take Darius Slayton’s word for it on a virtual call.

“He’s doing well,” Slayton said of Nabers. “I saw him today for the first time since Friday, but he was in good spirits. He’s doing what he needs to do. Concussion, all you can really do is keep your eyes closed. He’s handling that, and he’s in good spirits.”

Beathard has a 3-10 career record as a starter. He has played in six NFL seasons: three for the San Francisco 49ers (2017-18, 2020) and three for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2021-23).

The five wide receivers who worked out for the Giants were Kearis Jackson, Joseph Ngata, Bryan Thompson, Seth Williams and Joseph Scates.

Jackson, 24, who played his college ball at Georgia, played five games for the Tennessee Titans in 2023. He returned six punts for 48 yards. Williams, 24, who played at Auburn, had a cup of coffee in Denver with the Broncos in 2021.

Ngata, 23, who played at Clemson, was released recently by the Eagles. He has no NFL game experience. Neither do Thompson, 25, who was waived injured recently from the Buffalo Bills, or Scates, an undrafted former Memphis wideout cut by the Jaguars.

Jackson, 26, the defensive back not to be confused with the two-time MVP Baltimore Ravens quarterback, has made six career NFL starts, all with the Jets as a rookie in 2020. He was waived injured by the Carolina Panthers.

Greg Stroman was the other DB. He has played five NFL seasons in Washington and Chicago. He has started five games, and he returned both punts and kicks for Washington as a rookie in 2018.

Tuesday will bring clarity on what roster moves the Giants (1-3) feel are necessary as they prepare to travel for Sunday’s road game at the Seattle Seahawks.
