Five-second WhatsApp trick shows whether or not you’ve been blocked

We’ve all been there, out on a first date with someone, only to find that at the end of the (rather unsuccessful) evening, rather than be upfront with you, or letting you down gently, the person has blocked you on WhatsApp.

But how do you know for sure that you’ve been blocked?

Tech expert @comfietech took the time to explain to TikTok that there are a few ways you can determine that you’ve been added to their block list.

“WhatsApp users, here’s how to check if someone has blocked you on WhatsApp”, she said.

“First thing is, when you send them a message it will not be delivered”, she explained, so the message will only ‘one tick’ rather than ‘double ticking’.

Secondly, “you won’t be able to see their profile picture again”, which can be confusing if they never had a picture of themselves up in the first place.

But, if you used to see a smiling selfie as part of their profile, and now you’re seeing a grey outline of head and shoulders, it’s not good news.

Also, “if you try to call them on WhatsApp the call will not go through”.

She also shared that everyone has a write-up as part of their profile, and the default one is “Hey there! I am using WhatsApp” – but it can be customised to anything.

However, “if the person’s blocked you, you won’t be able to see their own [status]”.

So, if you check someone’s profile and it’s “blank”, it means you’ve likely been blocked. Either that, or your signal is terrible.

Someone in the comments pointed out that sometimes, one tick doesn’t mean blocked. They wrote: “One check if they haven’t received and read it. Not blocked. My son doesn’t have signal all the time. But once he’s online it becomes two checks”.

However, one check can also just simply mean you’ve been blocked – you’d have to try the other methods to clarify.

Another said: “Yep, my crush blocked me”. And a second fumed: “So many of my friends and even my old teacher.”
