Israel launches devastating airstrikes on Houthis as Middle East war widens

Israel has carried out airstrikes against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen – the country’s military has confirmed.

The Israeli Defence Force said targets including a seaport and power plants had been targeted.

Footage shows flame and smoke rising from an apparent strike in Hodeidah, a port on the Red Sea, on Sunday.

The strike comes after air raid sirens sounded across central Israel on Saturday afternoon, including at the Tel Aviv international airport, after the Houthis fired a missile towards the country.

The Houthis confirmed they had launched the attack towards Ben Gurion Airport, with the IDF saying it had been successfully intercepted.

An IDF spokesperson said: “The IAF [Israeli Air Force] struck military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime in Yemen in response to their recent attacks against Israel.

“The targets included power plants and a seaport, which were used by the Houthis to transfer Iranian weapons to the region, in addition to military supplies and oil.

“Over the past year, the Houthis have been operating under the direction and funding of Iran, and in cooperation with Iraqi militias, in order to attack the State of Israel, undermine regional stability, and disrupt global freedom of navigation.

“The IDF is determined to continue operating at any distance – near or far – against all threats to the citizens of the State of Israel.”

The Houthis have launched a number of missiles and drones towards Israel since the start of the Israel-Hamas war following the October 7 attack on Israel.
