Ditch tumble dryers for ‘genius’ way to dry clothes ‘faster’ indoors so they ‘don’t stink’

Laundry can be a pain to tackle, especially now that summer has ended. As the UK heads further into autumn, the increase in rainy days means more households are seeking ways to dry their clothes indoors without the luxury of a tumble dryer – a piece of kit not everyone has room or money for.

This predicament often leads people to opt for airers, but on their own, they can sometimes leave clothing smelling musty, even if washed impeccably.

To combat these unwanted odours, Mrs Hinch aficionados have disclosed a nifty companion for your airer that guarantees freshness for your laundry.

In a quest for speedy indoor drying advice, one woman turned to Facebook’s Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks page. Charlotte Holland posted her dilemma: “What’s the best way to dry clothes without a tumble dryer, please?” adding “I always find the clothes stink awful when I put them on the radiators/small clothes airer. Washing pile is like a mountain at the min so all answers are greatly appreciated.”

Frequent responders in the comment section concurred that pairing a dehumidifier with the clothes airer is the winning strategy.

These gadgets are designed to draw moisture from the air, an essential tool in humid parts of your abode which are prone to attracting allergens and bacteria.

Debbie Stevenson advised: “A dehumidifier placed in front of the clothes airer works the best. Game changer.”

Sarah Dennord shared her laundry hack, saying: “We use a dehumidifier next to our clothes airer and it’s genius.

“If you have a small bedroom or utility you can put them in together and shut the door then I find two loads on a clothes horse dries faster and doesn’t stink. You can wash in the morning and put away in the evening all smelling fresh.”

Dolores Connolly advised against putting damp clothes on radiators, suggesting instead: “It’s not good to put clothes straight from washing machine to radiator. It would be worth investing in a dehumidifier, clothes dry quickly with one, put them on an airer beside it.”

Morag Ellis recommended an additional spin cycle: “Put the clothes on another spin at max speed after the wash, really cuts down on drying times.”

She also added: “After, separate your laundry on the airer and place a dehumidifier next to it to suck up the moisture.”

The process works by regulating high humidity, which creates a dry environment that helps moisture evaporate from the clothes. The dehumidifier then captures this moisture from the air.

As a result, cool dry air is circulated back towards the clothes by the dehumidifier, effectively speeding up the drying time.
