Horror as grandmother and baby swept away after 'flood wave' hits holiday home

A grandmother and five-month-old baby were swept away as they tried to get out of flood waters in Italy. The search is ongoing for the pair but a spokesperson for the fire service says it is unlikely they will be found alive.

In Pisa province, flooding has destroyed the area and caused danger to life for those living there. The parents of the child were rescued from the roof of their holiday home.

Many have joined the search, with over 100 people looking for a grandmother and baby after the Sterza river broke its banks and floodwater quickly took over their house.

The family were from Germany and called for help at 9.30pm on Monday. As they tried to climb higher, the baby fell into the water and his grandmother was also lost trying to save him.

Firefighters have shared footage of the search which is taking place for the pair on social media. Commander of the local fire service, Nicola Ciannelli, told Corriere della Sera that a “very violent” flood had hit the house.

In the area, others also saved themselves by climbing higher into their house or into nearby trees.
