Don't buy a Pixel 9 – Google confirms 'something big' is coming this week

The Google Pixel 9 series of Android smartphones has just been released, and so you might assume this is the best time to invest and buy one if you’re looking for a new phone. Surely it’s best to get the device now when it is its newest, and enjoy it for a year before it is no longer the latest model in the line up?

This is usually true but this week you may want to wait a beat before parting with your hard earned cash – today might actually be the worst possible time to buy the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL or the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

That’s because Google is teasing “something big” on its official UK online store, and it’s possible that the Pixel 9 range is about to see a discount.

“We’re planning something big for our 26th birthday,” Google said.

“Countdown is on! Don’t miss out on our offers from Sep 27 to 29, and a very special treat from us on select purchases.”

You can click a link on this page to sign up for access to the deals, which Google will email you. They should also be available to anyone in the UK via the store website.

Admittedly this doesn’t confirm that the Pixel 9 will go on sale. After all, the phones only first went on sale barely a month ago, some only at the beginning of September. That means this potential sale event might not include the new phones, but it is possible.

Google also sells its Pixel Tablet, the Google Pixel Watch range, several Pixel Buds, streaming devices and even smart home screens and Wi-Fi routers. Offers could be on any and all these gadgets, so it’s definitely worth waiting until Friday 27 September to find out what these offers are.

As mentioned above, Google is saying there’s a “very special treat” on “selected purchases”. That’s very difficult to predict, but rival tech firm Apple offers gift cards on purchases in its annual sale event, and other firms opt to give away free pairs of earbuds or smartwatches when you purchase a smartphone from them.

So even if the Pixel 9 phones themselves are not discounted, you could benefit from waiting for this offer event to see if the phone you were thinking of buying could also net you some tech accessories while you’re at it.

Express.co.uk has had extensive time with all four new Pixel 9 phones and we’ve been impressed in particular by the Pixel 9 Pro. While the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is impressive with its bendable display and slim design, the 9 Pro stands out for offering better cameras than the Fold and all the flagship specs you’d expect from a £999 phone but in a handset that’s far more compact than the pocket-busting Pixel 9 Pro XL.
