Common freezer mistake you're making boosts your energy bills by 20%

Defrosting your freezer anytime soon? If the answer is yes and you’re seriously dreading it, don’t worry you’re not alone.

It’s one of those household chores we need to do every once in a while to maintain our freezer’s life and keep food stored safely.

But when the situation arises and you have to melt away that ice, you know it’s a messy and time-consuming job. But what if we told you, it doesn’t have to be.

Over on TikTok, user @katsaves, who has 44,300 followers, recently warned fans making a common mistake could lead to boosting energy bills by 20%.

She said: “You’re wasting so much money if your freezer looks like this! And how to actually defrost your freezer!”

In the clip, she added: “Just 2mm of ice will increase your energy use by 20%, that is going to cost and I definitely had way more than 2mm of ice in my freezer.

“I don’t even remember the last time I defrosted it, basically when ice builds up in the freezer, it uses more energy to keep the food inside at the correct temperature.

“In the long run, this could mean a replacement freezer is needed a lot sooner and the other downside is more energy use means higher energy bills.”

She claimed this is why defrosting your freezer is very important. In fact, it should be one of your regular cleaning tasks.

Sharing a tip someone taught her, the TikTok user explained: “Someone said put a pan of boiling water in the freezer and let that work its magic.

“That kind of works but not really. What you really need to do is turn the freezer off first and take all the food out. Then prepare the floor, you want to put down a few towels because it is going to get very very wet.

“Then you just want to let the ice melt on its own, so please learn from my mistakes.” Since it was shared, the post scooped 70,500 likes and thousands of comments.

One said: “Hair dryer works well.” While another added: “Defrost the freezer easy.”
