Husband shoots wife during elementary school drop off in Kansas

A husband shot his wife outside a Kansas elementary school as they dropped off their two children for classes for the day, police said.

The domestic violence incident unfolded on Monday in front of Cessna Elementary School in Wichita, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter told reporters at a news conference. The names of the couple involved have not been released, but police said they were dropped off by a Lyft around 9:15 a.m., KSN reported.

As their children exited the vehicle and entered the school building, a disagreement broke out between the parents, Easter said. Witnesses on the scene said that’s when the man pulled out a gun and shot the woman in the chest. She then ran toward the school for help, but her husband continued to pursue her, Easter added.

When a deputy arrived on the scene a short time later, the male suspect aimed his firearm at the woman’s head.

“The deputy took cover, and then when the suspect stepped a little bit away from our victim, the deputy shot the suspect,” Easter said.

The school was briefly placed on lockdown after the gunfire. Easter noted that no teachers or students were injured during the altercation.

“There was a small fight that took place between the deputy and the suspect, and he got him into custody,” the sheriff told reporters. “At this point, there’s not been any type of school shooting. There’s not been any kids that are hurt or in danger or anything like that.

Both the man and woman were hospitalized in critical condition in wake of the violence.

Authorities did not provide further details.
