Majorca has received a hammering of rain causing flights to be delayed and cancelled, affecting hundreds of passengers.

Palma Airport was also forced to suspend landings and take-offs for 20 minutes because of the adverse weather conditions, potentially devastating tourists seeking the last of the summer sun.

Airport authorities rushed to bring the situation under control The Palma Met Office put the island on a weather red alert, the most serious warning, more than 40 litres of rain per square metre could fall in some parts of Majorca.

The situation has been particularly dire in the popular coastal town of Soller who even saw flooding.

Those in Majorca will see some relief from the bad weather this afternoon, however, heavy rain is once again forecast for tomorrow where a red alert will once again be in place.

The maximum temperatures in the Balearics as a whole for tomorrow, September 23, will range between 25ºC and 27ºC, while the minimum temperatures will be between 16ºC and 19ºC.

Majorca and other nearby Spanish islands usually enjoy temperatures of up to 28C at this time of year, with an average of just 23mm of rainfall in September.

Majorca is definately seeing a stormy start to Autumn as on Saturday there was at one point an amber alert for the whole island, the rainfall was at its heaviest in the east and southeast.

Whilst, in Menorca on Saturday, Arenal d’en Castell in the north of the island was hit by flooding after 125 litres per square metre fell in the space of just 90 minutes.

This comes a month after Majorca saw intense rainfallthat caused several homes to become inundated by up to 50 centimetres of water.

The Civil Guard was actively involved in rescue operations, evacuating 10 people from their homes.

However, the weather is set to improve in Majorca as at present, Wednesday and Thursday look as if they will be sunny days with zero probability of rain.

On Friday and Saturday the risk of rain is forecast to make a return, with temperatures dropping especially on Saturday.
