A crash involving two police SUVs in Albany on Wednesday sent four officers to the hospital with head injuries, two of them serious, officials said.
The accident occurred just before 4 p.m. Officers responding to a “domestic-related incident” had requested backup units when dealing with a “combative suspect,” the Albany Police Department said in a news release.
Two police units rushing to the call “ultimately crashed into each other” at the intersection of Quail St. and Madison Ave., officials said. Photos and videos from the scene show one of the SVUs had also crashed into a pole.
Four officers were injured in the crash. They were treated at the scene and later transferred to Albany Medical Center Hospital.
All four were treated for head injuries and are expected to recover. One of them also suffered serious leg injuries, Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said at a news briefing.
Two of them have since been released, police said Wednesday night.
“While their injuries are going to require some significant recovery, they are not life-threatening,” Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said, according to local ABC affiliate WTEN.
The two officers who called for backup were exposed to powder cocaine and were taken to Albany Memorial Hospital for treatment. They were also released on Wednesday, police said.
