New Jersey man dies after being restrained by police

A New Jersey man died at the hospital following an encounter with law enforcement that saw him restrained by police officers, prompting an investigation.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability on Tuesday confirmed it would be looking into the incident, which began at an apartment in Bayonne.

Officers responded to the residence on Broadway, near Linnet Street, early Monday after they received a 911 call about a “lot of screaming” coming from inside the building, according to a statement from the attorney general’s office.

When they arrived on the scene around 12:20 a.m., the ruckus was still underway, police said. Officers eventually located “the man who had been yelling and requested medical assistance,” according to the attorney general.

Police opted to restrain the man before he was transported to Bayonne Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just before 8:45 a.m. His name has not been released and it’s unclear what medical issue he may have been facing just prior to his death.

No further details were provided.

The cause and manner of death are currently under investigation, according to the attorney general’s office, which is required to probe all deaths that occur during police encounters under a 2019 law.

Its findings will then be presented to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges are necessary.
