Low-maintenance houseplants you’re unlikely to kill – one doesn’t need much water

Houseplants are a lovely decorative addition to any living space, but some can be rather tricky to care for.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of low-maintenance plants that will look great indoors and don’t have many requirements from you.

African Spear Plant (Dracaena angolensis)

African Spear plants need bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which can scorch its leaves.

Simply water it thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.

Keep the humidity moderate and avoid over-fertilising; a balanced, diluted fertiliser once or twice a year is usually sufficient.

Don’t forget to prune any yellow or brown leaves to maintain its appearance and health.

ZZ Plant (Zamioculcus zamiifolia)

To care for a ZZ plant, place it in bright, indirect light, but it can also tolerate low light conditions.

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as it is drought-tolerant and overwatering can lead to root rot.

Maintain average room humidity and avoid fertilising frequently; a balanced fertiliser once or twice a year is usually enough.

Regularly remove any yellowing or dead leaves to keep the plant looking its best.

Baby Rubber Plant (Peperomia obtusifolia)

Place your Baby Rubber Plant in bright, indirect light for optimal growth – even though it can tolerate lower light levels.

Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding overwatering to prevent root rot. It prefers moderate humidity but can adapt to average household levels.

Feed with a balanced, diluted fertiliser once every six to eight weeks during the growing season, and regularly clean the leaves to keep them dust-free.
