Your microwave has a 'hidden compartment' – and it's likely filled with grease and grime

Debbie Sandler, an expert in organisation and cleaning, shared a startling and “nasty” discovery about her microwave in a video posted on Instagram.

The clip shows her using a drill to remove the top panel of her over-the-range microwave, exposing a concealed compartment filled with a buildup of old food and sauces. The revelation left the cleaning pro naturally grossed out, as she realised it was time to give it a good scrub and raise awareness.

“I bet y’all have your mouths open right now… am I right?” the content creator captioned the post. “That was me when I found this out.”

Sandler pointed out that if your microwave is installed above your stovetop, it likely has a similar hidden compartment that requires cleaning. “It’s probably the nastiest thing in your kitchen”, she said in the video.

She recommended washing the removable top twice a year and replacing the charcoal filter found within this compartment.

For those looking to spruce up their microwaves, the experts at Hisense UK recommend shunning harsh chemicals in favour of a mere 30p food item.

They said: “Your microwave can very quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs if it’s not cleaned regularly.

“Quite often, food will splatter on the sides and roof of the interior compartment, which invites germs to multiply if left for too long.

“To keep your microwave in top condition, wipe it down inside and out at least once a week. For tougher stains, heat a bowl of water with lemon slices for a few minutes, then wipe down the interior.

“The steam will loosen grime and the lemon will neutralise odours, giving you a bacteria-free microwave.”

Another favoured tactic is to take roughly 200ml of white vinegar, pour it into a bowl suitable for the microwave, and let it run uncovered inside the appliance, reports the Mirror.

Next, heat the natural cleaner in the microwave for five minutes before allowing it to sit for another five. Following this, cautiously remove the bowl and wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

They also suggest that other appliances such as air fryers, fridges, and washing machines need cleaning at least weekly.

They argue that maintaining these tasks can help eradicate unpleasant odours and contribute to a hygienic living environment.
