The beautiful but underrated European city that's the continent's oldest

Plovdiv in Bulgaria is Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city and one of the most fascinating places the continent has to offer.

Believed to have been founded in around 6000BC, it was named the European capital of culture five years ago due to its rich history and vibrant cultural heritage.

The city is known for its ancient Roman theatre, cobblestone streets and its quirky Old Town.

The Ancient Theatre is Plovdiv’s most famous cultural landmark – it sits on a hill overlooking the city. Despite being founded in the first century, it is still in use today and often features performances from the Plovdiv Opera and international guests who are honoured to play at this unique venue.

Spectators can admire the Rhodope mountains in the background, a sight creating a one-of-a-kind theatre experience.

Another must-visit area is the creative district which is called Kapana. Located at the heart of the city, this area is busy with shops, restaurants and galleries.

The district, once a parking area full of houses in ruins, was revitalised in 2014, and is now home to many small businesses including art shops, cocktail bars and cafes.

In the Old Town of Bulgaria’s second city, you’ll find Ottoman-style buildings and a range of architecture and art. One visitor said: “This is really worth seeing thanks to its well preserved merchant houses, pharmacy and other monuments from the Ottoman era.”

To explore Plovdiv, you should take a walk around the hills of the city. Naturally, you’ll do this as you’re making your way around the city anyway but make sure you visit Nebet Tepe which is in the Old Town. The view from the top is a great way to see the whole city from above.

While Plovdiv claims the title of oldest city in Europe, it is closely followed by Athens and Chania, both in Greece, and Lisbon in Portugal.
