A 66-year-old homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk in Midtown Manhattan was punched, kicked and bashed in the head with a fire extinguisher by a group of young toughs — leaving the victim clinging to life, police said Thursday.
The attackers, all in their late teens or early 20s, repeatedly punched and kicked their victim, then bashed him in the head with a fire extinguisher during the Aug. 4 attack, cops said.
Police on Thursday released surveillance photos of five suspects hoping that someone recognizes them. No arrests have been made.
The victim was sleeping on the sidewalk on Broadway near W. 37th St. about 1:20 a.m. when the gang ambushed him, cops said.
After the brutal beatdown, the attackers ran off down Broadway.
Medics rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Thursday.
Cops scouring the area found surveillance video of five suspects, all described as Black with medium builds. Nearly all were dressed all in black. One sported a black pullover mask while another wore a navy blue beanie.
