A manhunt is underway in at least two Georgia counties after two teen inmates attacked a sheriff’s deputy and escaped with his gun.
The Jenkins County Sheriff’s Office deputy was transporting the teens from court back to juvenile detention Thursday afternoon when they assaulted the officer. They got possession of a .45-caliber handgun and hit the deputy on the head, knocking him unconscious. They shot at him three times without hitting him before making their escape on Highway 56 just south of Augusta.
No other information about how the teens were able to attack the deputy was released.
The deputy, later identified as Milo Perry, is being treated at a hospital.
The teens were identified by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office as Corinthian Newton, 15, and Brandon Davis, 14. Both were initially facing burglary and firearms charges. The two were wearing Regional Youth Detention Center jumpsuits when they escaped but may have changed into different clothes.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning that the teens could be in Hancock Mill, McBean or Bennock Mill.
“Please lock your doors and report any suspicious individuals to 911 immediately,” the Burke County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on social media.
The escape comes days after gunman Nicholas Umphenour shot three corrections officers in a brazen ambush at a Boise hospital before escaping with convict Skylar Meade. The duo were apprehended Thursday in Twin Falls, Idaho but are considered suspects in two separate homicides committed while they were on the run.
