Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s transformation into a social media sensation following her release from prison has the internet abuzz. But the public remains starkly divided over what to make of her self-description on her social media profile.
The 33-year-old, best known as a survivor of Munchhausen-by-proxy syndrome, gained notoriety for orchestrating the murder of her mother, Dee Dee, in June 2015. Dee Dee had deceitfully maintained that Gypsy suffered from numerous severe illnesses, subjecting her to countless needless medical procedures.
Despite being in robust health and not needing a feeding tube or wheelchair, Gypsy-Rose felt increasingly suffocated under Dee Dee’s tightening grip. In a bid for freedom, Gypsy enlisted her online boyfriend’s help to kill her mother. Her actions resulted in an eight-year imprisonment term, ending with her December 2023 release.
Now a freed woman, Gypsy commands prominent attention, with media interviews, book releases, and documentary series detailing her life. On TikTok, where she boasts over 10.2 million followers, her bio reads: “Influencer, Author, Public Figure”.
This self-branding on the platform has sparked divisive reactions, especially after one TikTok user, @Alexa_bored11, shared her discomfort: “Plz tell me why I’m just now seeing what Gypsy’s TikTok bio says,” she questioned, tagging her post with: “It honestly cringes me out so much.”
The video racked up more than 36,000 likes, as others expressed their disapproval in the comments too. One user said: “Who is she influencing!?”
Another commented: “Gypsy is so delulu.” A third argued: “No cuz “public figure” is wild.” Meanwhile, other uses defended Gypsy for starting her life anew.
A viewer wrote: “Do you want it to say “ex murderer” or,” as a second argued: “But… she is a public figure and she’s got 20m followers, so she’s an influencer. I don’t understand why that’s a problem?” Someone else penned: “Y’all switched up on her so fast.”
