Carlos Alcaraz confirms chances of him pulling out of US Open injured

Carlos Alcaraz has declared himself fit for the US Open despite suffering an injury scare in practice yesterday.

The Wimbledon champion twisted his ankle during a hitting session with Francisco Cerundolo and immediately stopped and sought treatmewnt.

It is the same right ankle that the Spaniard injured in the first round uin Rio in February causing him to retire and miss a month of action.

But speaking in his pre-tournament press conference, the world No.3 said: “I just stopped my practice just for precaution. I didn’t feel comfortable enough to keep practising just in case if everything was going to be worse.

“But after a few hours I am feeling good. So tomorrow I will try to practise again 100 per cent without thinking about it.

“I wasn’t worried at all for my US Open participation. Obviously I was angry because I don’t want to stop the practice, just to respect Cerundolo, as well.”

The world No.3 won his fourth Grand Slam at SW19 but lost the Olympic final to Novak Djokovic and then smashed his racquet in frustration when he was beaten by Gael Monfils in the opening round of the Cincinnati Masters.

Alcaraz, who won his first Grand Slam here in 2022, is scheduled to play Aussie Li Tu in the first round in New York on Tuesday.

He added: “Obviously I [would] have loved to have more matches on my belt on hard court before the US Open. But it doesn’t affect me at all.

“If I look back a little bit, for example, [before] Roland Garros, I [didn’t have] too [many] matches on clay, and it was a pretty good result. And then in Wimbledon, same thing.

“So I don’t want to think that it’s going to be the same [as] the previous two Grand Slams, but I’m not worried about not having too many matches on hard court.”
