Mykonos, one of Greece’s most famous islands, has unexpectedly been labeled home to “Europe’s worst coastal town” by a recent survey.
Despite its reputation as a glamorous vacation destination with stunning beaches and picturesque streets, Mykonos Town was ranked at the bottom of a list by Which? Travel evaluating seaside towns across the continent.
The survey took into account various factors such as value for money, seafront quality, and overall visitor experience.
While Mykonos town received high marks for its visual appeal, including its iconic white-washed buildings and beautiful marina, it fell short in several other areas, leading to its disappointing ranking.
For years, Mykonos has been a hotspot for A-list celebrities, with stars like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney frequently spotted enjoying the island’s luxurious offerings.
This summer, the island continued to attract famous faces, including Nicole Scherzinger and Lottie Tomlinson. However, the influx of high-profile visitors has done little to mask the town’s shortcomings highlighted in the survey.
One of the key criticisms from the Which? survey is the exorbitant cost of staying in Mykonos Town. The island is notorious for its steep prices, with the average cost of a hotel room reaching nearly £200 per night.
This has led to growing concerns among travelers about whether Mykonos still offers good value for money. The survey suggested that holidaymakers “give it a miss” when planning their next European summer getaway.
Adding to the town’s poor ranking is the controversy surrounding some of its local businesses. The infamous DK Oyster Bar, for instance, has gained a reputation for overcharging tourists, with some visitors reporting shockingly high bills for basic food and drinks.
In one widely publicised incident, a couple claimed they were charged €800 (£710) for just two drinks, four crab legs, and a salad. Despite the bar owner’s denials, the incident has only reinforced the perception that Mykonos Town is overpriced.
Beyond the cost, the survey also pointed to issues with overcrowding, particularly during the peak summer months.
The island’s popularity has led to an influx of tourists, which has put a strain on local infrastructure and led to long waits at restaurants and crowded beaches. This has detracted from the overall experience for many visitors, contributing to the town’s low score in the survey.
Yet, despite these challenges, Mykonos remains a top destination for those seeking a lively party atmosphere and luxurious surroundings.
The island is known for its vibrant nightlife, with a plethora of beach clubs and bars that attract revelers from around the world. Mykonos also offers quieter spots, with some secluded beaches and cultural sites providing a more relaxed experience.
