Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. ‘real close’ to returning from UCL injury

After taking on-field batting practice on Wednesday, Jazz Chisholm Jr. had plans to hit off higher velocity before the Yankees’ Thursday matinée against the Guardians.

Prior to Thursday’s hitting session, Chisholm told the Daily News that he felt good swinging on Wednesday and that he did so without pain. The third baseman has been on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 13, with a left elbow sprain, but Aaron Boone said that the Yankees’ biggest pre-trade deadline acquisition could be back soon.

“We’ll kind of get through today and have a plan,” the manager said, “but I would say he’s real close to a return.”

Asked if Chisholm will need a rehab assignment, Boone added, “We’ll see if he goes and plays a game or not” before reiterating that the speedster is close.

The Yankees have used Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza at third with Chisholm out.

The club was cautiously optimistic from the get-go that Chisholm could return quickly after hurting himself on a head-first slide into home plate against the White Sox. The former Marlin made a huge impact on the Yankees prior to the injury, hitting .316/.361/.702 with seven home runs and 11 RBI over 14 games while learning third base on the fly.
