Yankees place Jazz Chisholm Jr. on IL, DFA Enyel De Los Santos

CHICAGO — As expected, Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be sidelined for a bit.

The Yankees placed the third baseman on the 10-day injured list with what the team is calling a left elbow sprain on Wednesday. The move is retroactive to August 13.

Chisholm injured his elbow while sliding head-first into home plate during Monday’s loss to the White Sox. On Tuesday, Aaron Boone said that Chisholm had suffered an ulnar collateral ligament injury, but the severity was not known.

Chisholm has had a huge impact on the Yankees in his short time with the team. In addition to learning third base on the fly, he’s hit seven home runs to go with 11 RBI and a .316/.361/.702 slash line in 14 games with his new team.

Chisholm said Monday that he was not “super concerned” about the injury, but the Yankees now have to use alternative options at third base with their biggest trade deadline acquisition out.

Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu are among those options, and the club also promoted Oswald Peraza in a corresponding move for Chisholm. The 24-year-old Peraza is hitting .304/.398/.588 with seven homers and 20 RBI over his last 27 minor league games.

Jon Berti could also be an option at third in the coming weeks. On Tuesday, Boone said that Berti (calf) could start a rehab assignment in the next week or so.

Chisholm wasn’t the Yankees’ only pre-trade deadline acquisition to receive bad news on Wednesday, as the team designated Enyel De Los Santos for assignment.

The right-handed reliever, acquired from the Padres, had a 14.21 ERA in 6.1 innings for the Yankees. He allowed eight hits and seven earned runs over 1.2 innings in Monday’s game.

In another expected and corresponding move, the Yankees promoted Will Warren to start Wednesday’s series finale in Chicago.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details.
