This year’s MTV Video Music Awards will be bumped by a day to avoid apparent conflicts with the upcoming presidential debate.
Previously scheduled for Sept. 10, the annual ceremony will now take place the following night after Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump agreed to a televised face-off with ABC News on that same date.
The Sept. 11 show will go on at the UBS Arena in Elmont, Long Island and air live on MTV at 8 p.m.
According to Variety, MTV did not cite the conflicting debate for its shift in programming but “made it unofficially clear that it has a history of encouraging civic engagement and did not want to stand in the way of viewers becoming educated about what’s at stake in a presidential election.”
The network also announced it will support the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance in observance of the 23rd anniversary of the terror attacks on the United States.
The first round of performers for the 2024 MTV VMAs were also unveiled this week and include Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Rauw Alejandro and Sabrina Carpenter.
Carpenter, who first performed during the 2021 pre-show, is nominated for six awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit “Espresso.”
Taylor Swift meanwhile leads with 10 nominations, followed by her “Fortnight” collaborator Post Malone with nine and Ariana Grande and Eminem with six each.
Fans can vote up to 10 times a day across 15 categories through Aug. 30 at vote.mtv.com, while voting for Best New Artist continues all the way through showtime.
A host for this year’s ceremony has not yet been announced.
