Entrepreneur Elon Musk plans to interview Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at 8 p.m. Monday.
The conservative billionaires will broadcast their chat on the social media platform X, which Musk purchased for $44 billion in October 2022. Trump owns the social media platform Truth Social, which he launched earlier that year after being banished from X when it was known as Twitter.
It’s not clear if Trump’s platform will carry the conversation. It’s billed as a live chat with no ground rules.
Trump was suspended from Twitter after his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 election. Trump’s account, and those of many other right-wing figures, were reinstated following Musk’s acquisition of the company.
The ex-president had used Twitter to falsely tell his supporters the election had somehow been rigged. It’s a claim he continues to make without evidence.
Musk himself has been criticized for disseminating disinformation on X, though he’d been reluctant until recently to voice full-throated support for Trump.
“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk posted on the platform in June after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
Those words of encouragement came two years after Musk said it was time for the 78-year-old GOP leader to “hang up his hat & sail into the sunset.”
Trump dismissed Musk as “another bulls–t artist” during a 2022 rally but has since come to appreciate the South African billionaire.
Trump posted a campaign ad on X Monday ahead of his meeting with Musk.
“Entertainment guaranteed!” Musk posted late Sunday to promote the discussion.
