Aerosmith announces retirement from touring, cancels rescheduled dates

Less than four months after announcing their rescheduled tour dates, Aerosmith has revealed they’re retiring from touring — and canceling those shows — citing lead singer Steven Tyler’s vocal cord injury as the primary reason.

The band made the announcement on Instagram Friday night, expressing their regret and reflecting on their storied career.

“It was 1970 when a spark of inspiration became Aerosmith,” the post began. “Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades.”

“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing,” the statement continued. “As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. … Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible.”

The band concluded that they made the “heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision … to retire from the touring stage.”

Fans who already purchased tickets to one of their upcoming tour dates will be refunded, they assured.

Aerosmith’s 2023 Peace Out: The Farewell Tour had previously been postponed last fall after the severity of Tyler’s condition became apparent.

He reportedly suffered an injury while singing that left him with “bleeding” vocal cords, and was initially ordered by doctors to go on vocal rest for 30 days.

His doctor noted at the time that “in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care.”

“We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve,” Tyler announced in a post at the time.

Those pushed-back dates were eventually rescheduled to begin next month, with New York area shows at Newark’s Prudential Center on Dec. 28 and Madison Square Garden on Feb. 23, 2025.

Aerosmith first formed in Boston in the early 1970s, with a lineup consisting of Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer.

The band released 15 studio albums, 12 of which eventually went platinum, with classic tracks like “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Janie’s Got a Gun,” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.”
