So much wrong in the world, and we bash Israel?
Manhattan: Vice President Kamala Harris recently stated that she can’t remain silent with regard to the suffering in Gaza. But she doesn’t seem to acknowledge that all the suffering in Gaza has been caused by a war started by the government of the Palestinians who live there, and who freely voted Hamas into power.
Furthermore, Harris and the Democrats say very little about horrific suffering elsewhere. In the Ukraine war, 400,000 soldiers and civilians have been killed, with 6 million displaced. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian children have been kidnapped and taken into Russia to be “reconditioned” (brainwashed), yet Harris remains silent. Sudan, in the middle of its own civil war, has had 20,000 of its people killed and more than 4 million displaced in the last several months. Yet, our leadership in Washington has very little to say about that disaster.
It seems apparent that Israel is the only allied nation that our government officials feel comfortable criticizing during its time of need. What is it about Israelis that would make them susceptible to this insulting treatment, where countries claiming to be allies are oddly untroubled dictating to this militarily accomplished nation how it should conduct its war against a murderous Middle Eastern cult of extremists? The answer is not a mystery, according to this writer. The enigma is that since World War II, so little has changed. It is disturbing that humanity has made so little progress in overcoming our innate need to blame others for our shortcomings. The words and policies of the leadership in Washington reveal that, in the battle against racism and antisemitism, America has a long way to go. Lloyd Litwak
Ceaseless slaughter
Ridgewood, N.J.: Airstrikes by the IDF have become common reading here in America. But are they lawful under international law? That answer determines war crimes. Killing countless civilians to get one Hamas fighter is a war crime (that was determined during WWII when the Nazis went after Jewish resistance fighters). Israel has troops on the ground in Gaza. Let them go in and get the armaments. I, for one, am tired of reading about dead women, children and scores of wounded and dying. U.S. support for these crimes must halt. Israel’s actions since Oct. 7 have created more opposition than Hamas’ actions. Sad, but true. Peter J. Peirano
Sacrilege
Brooklyn: To Voicer L. Veneroni: You congratulate Paris for a most wonderful Olympics opening ceremony. Unfortunately, the portrayal of the Last Supper with drag queens and a grown man painted blue with his testicles hanging out while a child was onstage, also observed on live television by children and adults, is deeply troubling and offensive. This crossed the line of respect for religious sentiments and the exposure of a grown man’s genitalia for all to see. The mockery needs to stop. If it were any other religion, this would have went sour. John Rico
Off-color
Monroe Township, N.J.: Paris Olympics organizers thought it would be OK to do a parody of the Last Supper with drag queens. Even in this woke world, that is not cool. Everyone should be up in arms. We need more companies like C Spire to pull their ads. Maybe then the organizers will wake up. Keep the Games about sports. John Ray
Longer stretch
Millburn, N.J.: Voicer Lawrence Krasner is understandably unhappy with the play of the Yankees. But charge him with an error. He says he believes that the Yankees’ drought of not winning the World Series since 2009 is their longest since Babe Ruth joined the team. No. They won the series in 1978, and didn’t win it again for another 18 years, in 1996. He can rip Brian Cashman all he wants for not having a better team, but building a World Series champion is a whole lot harder than finding out who won the World Series in any year. Ed Marks
New talent
Staten Island: Why does Major League Baseball have farm teams? I ask this because the Mets are in dire need of pitchers. Hopefully, someone in the Mets organization will make the suggestion of bringing up a pitcher from the minors. That is a no-brainer. Also, look for another manager. Jeffrey Van Pelt
Let’s help
Bronx: Reading Voicer Oleksandr Moroz’s letter left me heartbroken. Could Gov. Hochul’s crime victim assistance unit help him with his medical bills? Since he lost wages and is a Ukrainian refugee with a son, could the local Knights of Columbus Council or even the Daily News step up and do a GoFundMe for him? In a city of 8 million people, surely we can all pitch in and help this man. Chet Walker
Not safe to walk
Astoria: These moped drivers riding on sidewalks and not obeying traffic rules are creating fear in the citizens of this city. Pedestrians are getting hit and killed by these drivers. If you say something if one hits or barely misses you, the risk is an altercation or getting killed. The out-of-towner killed in Hell’s Kitchen the other day is the perfect example (“Man dies 3 days after punch by moped rider in Hell’s Kitchen,” July 30). Our law enforcement has to make it a priority to get these illegal and legal moped and scooter drivers off the roads for the safety of all who live in or visit our city. City Council, Mayor Adams and our NYPD, please help make our sidewalks and streets safe again. It’s our right to be safe. Anthony Gigantiello
Go with her
Brooklyn: Donald Trump is a poor excuse for a human being. As such, we can’t allow this lowlife to lead us for four more years and beyond! Therefore, vote for Kamala Harris. She is such a wonderful alternative. Arthur Mazlin
No concerns?
New Hyde Park, L.I.: For months, everyone made a big deal about President Biden’s age. Now he’s out, yet no one is talking about the other guy not only being very, very old but also insane. What’s up with that? Bob Wiecezak
Beware the blitzkrieg
Howard Beach: The Nazi war machine was very successful against the democratic powers at the beginning of WWII. They used new tactics while the Allies were still playing by the old rules. The same can be said for the Trump war machine now. It’s put aside the rule of law and civil behavior in favor of shock troops. Democrats will have to adapt quickly, as the MAGA-ites are well-organized and have a battle plan: Project 2025. Like the Nazis, they will replace all decent members of the government with their own Special Service loyalists. Only men and women of goodwill and perseverance can overcome this surge of fascism. Vote out the lawless while you still can! Ernest Kienzle
Mudslinging
Manhattan: Reading the vitriolic and calumny-filled letters that you have recently run — including letters that have assailed former President Trump as “that piece of crap” and his veep pick JD Vance as a “mutt” — it’s no wonder that my erudite, thoughtful letters regarding legislative proposals to instate dress codes for boys and girls at our public schools, and another that decried the NYPD chief of patrol using his high NYPD position to express base and personal viewpoints while wearing his badge and uniform (without any rebuke from our mayor or police commissioner), you deemed unfit to print and sent them straight into your wastebasket. Talk about the lowering of journalistic standards! Michael Meyers
Crackpot comments
Brooklyn: You published a letter from Voicer Tom Nolan Sr. in which he blames the “Marxist Democrats” for plotting to bankrupt the country by letting in more undocumented immigrants — under the direction of (who else?) the evil mastermind George Soros. In the same issue, Voicer Margaret T. Boyer tells us how she has researched her book on the disappearance of the ancient Egyptians by watching the sci-fi/fantasy TV series “Ancient Aliens.” Really, has it come to this? Is the Daily News so desperate to fill its pages that it’s now turning over its Voice of the People column to bona fide crackpots? What can we look forward to next, an explanation of terrestrial geology from the Flat Earth Society? Steven Jay Cohen
