Man ambushed, killed ‘execution-style’ outside Philadelphia mosque

A man was killed while walking through a mosque parking lot late Tuesday afternoon when another man ran up behind him and shot him in the head, Philadelphia authorities said.

After the man collapsed, the gunman stood over his victim and continued firing, “execution-style,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told WPVI, citing surveillance video.

When it was all over, 17 shots had been fired, Small said.

Police rushed the 43-year-old victim to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:13 p.m.

The incident occurred near the parking lot outside the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood at around 4:55 p.m., police said.

“On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at approximately 4:55 p.m., a 43-year-old Black male was shot multiple times while on the highway at 1501 Germantown Avenue,” Philadelphia police told the Daily News in an emailed statement. “The crime scene is currently secured, and no arrests have been made. Additionally, no weapons have been recovered at this time.”

The man had just left his car and begun walking toward the mosque for a service when he was assaulted, Small told WTXF.

Police cordoned off the parking lot along Germantown Avenue as they investigated, according to WPVI.

Authorities urged anyone with information to contact the police department. The details released so far were “preliminary and subject to change,” police told the Daily News, adding that “updates will be provided as they become available.”
