With the baseball world focused on the trade deadline on Tuesday, the Yankees threw a curveball.
The team scratched Gerrit Cole from his scheduled start in Philadelphia. Will Warren was promoted to take the ace’s place — and make his major league debut.
Fortunately for the Yankees, Cole doesn’t seem to be dealing with anything serious. He and the team said that he’s experiencing “general body fatigue” after he had trouble recovering after his last start against the Mets.
Cole said that he doesn’t plan to go on the injured list or undergo tests, and he hopes to make his next start in a few days. He added that his right elbow is not an issue after it suffered from inflammation earlier this season.
That injury, sustained in spring training, stemmed from Cole having a tough time recovering. It delayed the start of his season; he has a 5.40 ERA over seven starts.
Warren had a 6.11 ERA in 20 Triple-A starts. The righty had a 2.91 ERA over his last four, though.
