Man shot on Bronx street killed during holdup, mugger accidentally blasted himself

A 52-year-old man shot in the head on a Bronx street was killed during a holdup in which the gunman accidentally blasted himself, police said Thursday.

The new information about Jose Baez’s final moments on Sunday came as police nabbed the man suspected of killing him.

On Tuesday, cops arrested Julio Ramirez, 28, after being alerted a patient recovering at Lincoln Hospital had suffered a gunshot wound, cops said.

Police believe Ramirez accidentally shot himself as he held up Baez on Bruckner Blvd. near Pugsley Ave. in Castle Hill at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

Baez was shot in the head during the robbery, police said. Ramirez got away with Baez’s money. Cops have not determined how much cash was stolen.

Medics rushed Baez to Jacobi Medical Center but he couldn’t be saved. He lived in Highbridge, according to cops.
