BALTIMORE — With the Yankees closing out the first half in Baltimore, the team is injecting some youth.
The club promoted Jorbit Vivas, the team announced Friday afternoon.
J.D. Davis is going on the 10-day injured list with the stomach flu in a corresponding move.
A second baseman by trade, Vivas is the Yankees’ 15th-best prospect, according to MLB.com. The 23-year-old was acquired alongside Victor González over the offseason in the trade that sent Trey Sweeney to the Dodgers.
Vivas has also played some third base, totaling 129 professional games there. The position is an area of need for the Yankees with DJ LeMahieu still searching for consistent production, though it’s unclear how Vivas will be used.
Second baseman Gleyber Torres has also lacked consistency.
Vivas made a strong impression with his lefty swing in camp this year, but his spring ended on an unfortunate note after he sustained a left orbital fracture.
Following a few rehab games at lower levels, the Venezuelan hit .258/.404/.424 with five home runs and 19 RBI over 37 contests at Triple-A. He hit all five of those dingers over his last 20 games with the RailRiders, a span that also saw him slash .329/.466/.614.
Vivas hit .269/.381/.407 with 13 home runs and 63 RBI over 135 games for the Dodgers’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates in 2023. He’s also got some speed, stealing 34 bases over the last two seasons.
Davis, meanwhile, has hardly played with the Yankees not running into many lefties lately. He was acquired from the A’s for Jordan Groshans in June and spent most of spring training with the Giants.
The veteran corner infielder has hit .077 over 13 at-bats with the Yanks.
