Dartmouth suspends 2 Greek organizations amid hazing death investigation

Dartmouth College has suspended two Greek organizations amid an investigation into the death of a student over the weekend, school officials said Tuesday.

The body of 20-year-old Won Jang was pulled from the Connecticut River on Sunday around 7:30 p.m., the Hanover Police Department said in a news release.

The preliminary investigation indicated no foul play was suspected, authorities said Sunday night. However, an anonymous email sent to police on Monday suggested “some hazing” could’ve been involved in the student’s death, Police Chief Charles Dennis told local television station WMUR.

Jang, of Middletown, Del., had attended a social event with Beta Alpha Omega fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority on Saturday night. according to The Dartmouth, the school’s student newspaper.

Jang was a member of Beta, according to the publication.

On Tuesday, the school said it had suspended both Greek organizations, but didn’t offer any details.

The fraternity was on alcohol probation following a suspension in the fall, Jana Barnello, a college spokesperson, told The Dartmouth.

APhi had also been placed on alcohol probation in the fall, but had since returned to “good standing,” Barnello said.

The Hanover Police Department is leading the investigation, school officials said in a statement, adding Dartmouth is “working closely” with authorities.
