Baby killed in Lanzarote horror crash pictured as dad fights for life in hospital

A baby girl who was killed in a horror crash has been named and pictured. Four-month-old Harper Ayton died on Monday evening at the Playa Blanca resort on the Canary Island, after a car mounted the pavement and ploughed into crowds.

Parents Alex Chadkirk, 28, and Timothy Ayton, 40, along with maternal grandparents Andrea and Derek Chardkirk were also injured in the incident.

The family was rushed to hospital following the crash. Harper’s dad Timothy and grandmother Andrea were the most seriously hurt and are understood to be in intensive care in a nearby hospital. Alex’s dad Derek was also hospitalised though with less serious injuries.

Harper, whose mum proudly showed off her baby daughter in adorable photos following her birth last November, died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics to save her.

It is alleged the family were hurt, and Harper killed, after an expat who was allegedly over the drink-drive limit mounted the pavement.

The names of the crash victims emerged today as the four Brits remained in hospital in the Lanzarote capital Arrecife.

Recruitment education worker Alex and her partner and parents were hit as they walked along the pavement near their holiday villa in the resort of Playa Blanca around 6.30pm on Monday evening. Harper’s doting mum and dad are thought to have been on their first sunshine break away with her since the birth.

The woman accused of causing the incident, had her first scheduled court appearance suspended yesterday when she suffered a panic attack after being smuggled into the building past waiting press by police.

Town hall officials said in a statement in the aftermath of Monday’s accident she appeared to be under the influence of drink and drugs as they confirmed a British baby had died and four relatives including her parents and maternal grandparents had been injured. Officials confirmed the suspect would remain under investigation.

The other casualties, who also survived, were a Swedish mother and daughter who had just arrived in the resort. The younger woman had to be airlifted to a hospital in the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria because of the severity of her injuries.
