Florida police shoot suspect after reports of ‘active shooter situation,’ standoff

A suspect was shot and taken into custody by police Wednesday morning after a reported “active shooter situation” and standoff at an apartment complex in Melbourne, Fla.

The situation unfolded when officers from the Melbourne Police Department responded to a suspicious person report. When they arrived around 9 a.m., the suspect fired at the approaching officers, went inside the Pentagon Garden Apartments complex and barricaded himself.

Additional officers arrived and surrounded the complex during the standoff.

At around 10 a.m., the suspect shot at the officers again.

When the man finally exited the building, he started firing again and was shot multiple times before being taken into custody. His condition is currently unknown.

No other information about what led to the original 911 call has been made public, and the suspect’s identity has not been released.

No law enforcement officers were wounded in the incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation since it’s now considered an officer-involved shooting, according to Florida Today.
