'Mysterious’ sci-fi-worthy monolith appears in desert leaving authorities baffled

Authorities have once again discovered a “mysterious monolith”, in a desert north of Las Vegas, with no clear indication of how the strange object got there.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the shiny, metallic shard was found by its search and rescue unit near Gass Peak this weekend.

The force shared a photo of the bizarre find on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “We see a lot of weird things when people go hiking, like not being prepared for the weather, not bringing enough water… but check this out!”

The object may have been difficult to spot, as its reflective surface makes it almost impossible to pick out at some angles.

It comes just months after a hiker in Wales says he stumbled upon a mysterious “UFO”-like monolith on a hillside along the border with England.

He shared a picture of the object which appeared to have the same triangular prism shape as the most recent find.

Similar monoliths have appeared in Belgium, Romania and the Isle of Wight, reminiscent of the alien monoliths that appear in the opening scenes of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It comes after another was discovered in Utah back in November 2020, thought to be between 10 feet and 12 feet high.

Utah state wildlife employees stumbled across it while counting sheep from a helicopter, according Salt Lake City’s KSL-TV reports.

Bret Hutchings, the helicopter pilot, described the experience as “about the strangest thing that I’ve come across out there in all my years of flying,” the outlet reported.

The Utah Department of Public Safety said at the time it had been installed in a remote area and there was “no obvious indication” who might be responsible.

Only a week later, another of the peculiar objects was discovered in Atascadero, California, north of Los Angeles.

Back in 2020, New Mexico art collective The World Most Famous Arist appeared to take credit for various monoliths that appeared across the globe at the time, but have yet to comment on the latest finds.

The group’s founder, Matty Mo, has been approached for comment via email.
