German police shoot dead Euro 2024 knifeman after man killed at party

German police have fatally shot at a knifeman after an individual was killed at a Euro 2024 party in the city of Magdeburg. The male attacker killed one person and stabbed three others in the aftermath of Germany’s 5-1 win over Scotland on Friday night.

He launched his attack at a private party who were watching the opening match of the Euro 2024 football tournament. Police were called to Genossenschaftsweg in Wolmirstedt, Saxony-Anhalt.

The 27-year-old attempted to attack the police but an officer drew a pistol and shot the perpetrator. The police have confirmed that the man died in hospital.

A spokesperson said on Saturday morning: “Firearms were used. The perpetrator died in hospital.”

The attack broke out at 9:30pm on Friday. Three people were left injured while two others – a 50-year-old woman and a 75-year-old man – suffered severe wounds. A 56-year-old man suffered minor injuries.

No further update has been provided on the condition of those victims.

The same knifeman is also suspected of killing another male, aged 23, at a tower block near where the party took place. According to the Magdeburger Volksstimme newspaper, police were called to the scene following reports that the attacker had threatened people on an allotment while on his way to the venue.

Local reports say that the attacker was an Afghanistan national, as was the man killed in the tower block.

Nancy Faeser, the German interior minister, said: “We are arming ourselves against all conceivable dangers with the maximum commitment of the security authorities. Our focus ranges from the threat of Islamist terror to hooligans and cyber attacks. The Federal Police will protect Germany’s borders, airports and rail traffic.”

Meanwhile, a group of around 50 Italy fans have reportedly been stopped by German police after they were in possession of knives, paper bombs and balaclavas.

Rai News claim that the supporters were blocked from coming into contact with Albanian fans in front of a restaurant. They are now being held in police offices, awaiting a decision from the judiciary.
