Golf star Rory McIlroy and wife Erica Stoll have “resolved” their issues, just weeks after he filed for divorce.
The Northern Irish golf pro, 35, who filed to divorce just days before competing in the US PGA Championship last month, addressed the “unfortunate” chatter about his personal life in speaking to The Guardian.
“There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game,” said McIlroy. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
The reconciliation comes nearly a month after news broke that McIlroy submitted his divorce filing in Florida on May 13, according to court records obtained by TMZ.
McIlroy’s manager said in a statement to the outlet at the time that his client wanted to make “this difficult time … as respectful and amicable as possible.”
This isn’t the first time McIlroy has publicly backpedaled a significant relationship decision. Mere months after getting engaged to Danish tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki on New Year’s Eve 2013, McIlroy claimed he’d gotten cold feet and called off the wedding.
He issued a statement at the time attributing the decision to realizing he “wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails” once the spouses-to-be sent out their wedding invitations. McIlroy, who reportedly started dating Stoll later that year, called the split “mutual.”
McIlroy and Wozniacki were together when he and Stoll met at the PGA’s Ryder Cup event in 2012.
In spring 2015, McIlroy told The Times of London he’d “met someone new,” though he then referred to them as “good friends,” noting they’d had a three-year-long friendship.
They got engaged that year and tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony in 2017, before welcoming daughter Poppy in summer 2020.
