Readers sound off on Biden vs. Trump, ‘Gasoline Alley’ and union Gaza solidarity

The choice before us reveals a dearth of vision

New Rochelle, N.Y.: It must be apparent to all readers of the Daily News that there are diverse opinions on the qualifications of Donald Trump and President Biden. It appears that society here and worldwide have significant concerns as to how our election will affect their wellbeing.

If we think closely about our form of government, we have to acknowledge that it is inadequate in serving the needs of our beloved nation. We are a constitutional republic and not a democracy by name or character. What we see over the years is that states have almost as much power as the federal government in setting forth conditions and consequences that affect all voters and citizens. Examples are the refugee issue, gun control and birth control. In the latter case, I would prefer to leave that issue in the hands of our Lord and not the federal or state governments. Our Lord has stated in his own testaments that we are given choice.

My position is that both Joe Biden and Donald Trump lack the character, skill and vision to lead this great nation. Our houses of worship must also put some meat behind the recitation of written testaments and scripture and demand places at the table. We could profit from a definition of the slogan Make America Great Again. That leader has done the opposite. We can’t be great if we are separated from world order and affairs. Our current leader has little skill in planning and is too involved in canceling what is already working. They both should step aside and let new leaders be put into place while we still have a place. Warren Gross

Sole option

Oyster Bay, L.I.: I am a lifelong Democrat and grew up in the NYC suburbs. It is imperative that Biden is the victor in the 2024 election. As most people know, Trump’s family history is horrific since his grandfather came over from Germany! Trump is all about himself and nobody else! A total narcissist. We need a president who will be there for all citizens, regardless of race, religion or ethnicity. Both candidates are rather old, but Biden is historically known to be a good human being. Maureen King Cassidy

Missed a zinger

Manhattan: For Friday’s paper’s headline on the Trump verdict, you should have made a play off of “Home Alone 2”: Trump: Lost in New York. Melissa Schiller

Unanimous

Scarsdale, N.Y.: Trump has railed against the crooked and biased jury that found him guilty. It should be noted that hundreds of citizens were interviewed by the prosecutors and the defense lawyers. Of these hundreds of potential jurors, 12 were picked and vetted by the defense and the prosecution. I am sure the defense attorneys saw in some of them the possibility that they would vote to acquit or possibly wind up with a hung jury. They were wrong. All 12 jurors selected by the prosecution and defense voted unanimously on 34 counts to convict Trump of crimes against the people of New York state. Ouch! Mr. Trump, the unbiased truth hurts. Harvey Wielstein

Unbelievable liar

Freehold, N.J: I totally agree with Voicer Irene Dikranian when she says you can’t believe a word Donald Trump says. Actually, Irene, I would add to your comment by saying that if he swore he was lying, I wouldn’t believe him. John Carrig

Fine by them

Dayton, Ohio: In its May 31 editorial regarding Trump (“Guilty as charged“), the Daily News writes, “Will this legitimate conviction cause his supporters to rethink their unwavering confidence in a man they think can do no wrong? It should.” The Daily News knows it will not change the minds of his supporters. They already know Trump is a narcissistic sociopath. They don’t mind because Trump believes in authoritarianism (as opposed to democracy), is anti-immigration, is pro-white straight male, and has appointed three far-right Supreme Court justices. Almost all Republican politicians support Trump because they agree with what he says and does or because they believe Republican voters agree with what he says and does. Vic Presutti

Civic duty

Whitestone: Congratulations to the jury in the Donald Trump hush money trial in Manhattan. Every one of these men and women knew the risks they were taking in being a jurist and they decided to be honorable citizens to protect democracy and the rule of law. The verbal attacks by Trump on these jurors began right after the trial. These are certainly violations of the gag order issued by Judge Juan Merchan. It doesn’t take a psychologist or sociologist to understand that Trump and the MAGA movement would not have the power they do without a core of racism that permeates the radical right wing of the Republican Party. If Americans think the riots of the 1960s that led to the Kerner Commission were frightening, they may be shocked at what will happen if Trump is elected and tries to take the radical steps he has promised his followers. Michael J. Gorman

Sign of decline

Yonkers: The verdict in the case of former President Donald Trump is in and it confirms that the United States is now officially a Third World banana republic. The far left’s nine-year, ruinous quest to destroy Trump has not just tipped the scales of Lady Justice, but has ripped off the blindfold and thrown her in the Hudson River. The message from the leftist Democrats and their odious myrmidons in the media, Hollywood, academia, Big Tech, et al is thus: Agree with our narrative or be destroyed. Their corruption has become such that calling their environment the “swamp” is no longer sufficient, for they have now degenerated into a virulent miasma hungry for power no matter the cost to the country. Without serious correction come November at every level, America approaches the abyss. James McCaffrey

Wheels of justice

Kew Gardens: To the millions of Trump voters, I say take heart. This conviction is stacked with numerous reversible errors upon appeal from the beginning to the end of the trial. This is what the most respected legal minds have objectively concluded. The famous phrase “justice is blind,” depicted by the lady wearing a blindfold and holding scales, represents the impartiality and objectivity of the law without the influence of politics or other bias factors. In the end, and upon a reversible decision, this trial will go down in history as a politically driven prosecution rife with unfairness to the defendant in both judicial proceedings and his rights under our Constitution. Now is the time to take consolation in a famous phrase: It ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings. Phil Serpico

Birds of a feather

Katonah, N.Y.: Tell me, will Sean “Diddy” Combs and R. Kelly be future hell-mates? Just curious. Gregg Cunningham

Marvelous Miss Melba

Bronx: It’s been years since I followed the comic “Gasoline Alley,” but I have started reading it again. I remember Miss Melba, the mayor or mayoress of Gasoline Alley, as a plain young woman, constantly adjusting the shoulder straps on her dress. Now I see she has evolved into an attractive, sophisticated woman. I would like to know when Miss Melba’s evolution started and what was the readers’ reaction to her change? Arye Barkai

Tradition of solidarity

Ramsey, N.J.: To Voicer Tony Anastasio: I too was a CWA member (1101) for the same time. By bringing in Jewish members of your family, you made this your personal fight. This is not what unions are about. Unions have always fought for the oppressed, no matter who they are. They spoke out for the LGBTQ movement as well as BLM, to name a few. They march in ethnic parades as well. Those on campus were there just to bring to light America’s policies toward Israel and the way the Palestinians are being treated in Gaza. Why are they crybabies? Because you don’t agree! They were speaking out. As you said, “There is unity in numbers.” Some of those students paid the price for their actions. So before you say that you and your friends don’t want anything to do with “your” union, just remember that “we” retirees got the benefits we have because of the union. Robert Giordano
