Popular luxury brand ranked most likely to pass MOT first time despite many being old

The company car management company Wessex Fleet has shared the vehicles that are most likely to fail their next MOT.

As many aspects of motoring continue to rise in price, a large number of motorists are looking to make sure that their vehicle passes its MOT first time, meaning they would not have to pay another £54.85 for another test.

However, Wessex Fleet noted that some vehicles are far more likely to pass than others, highlighting that BMWs had the highest percentage of MOT passes during 2023.

Over the 12-month period, only 21.67 percent of models built by the German prestige brand failed the test, requiring the owner to fix any issues before getting it re-inspected.

Despite the average BMW in the UK being 12 years old, Wessex Motors suggested that most owners look after high-end models better than less expensive alternatives.

However, Wessex Fleet also highlighted that the fuel used by vehicles can also considerably affect how it performs during an MOT.

Throughout 2023, diesel-powered vehicles were found to have the worst pass-rate, with 30.24 percent of the 14 million tested failing.

With sales of new diesel cars decreasing over recent years, with plans to ban their sale by 2035, the examples being tested are getting older and therefore more likely to have worn out or faulty components.

In comparison, the company noted that electric vehicles and hybrids both perform much better during MOTs, with a pass rate of slightly over 15 percent during 2023.

With more motorists making the switch to a zero-emission vehicle, Wessex Fleet highlighted that the age of EVs and hybrids are notably younger than petrol and diesel models.

In addition, the MOT test for these cars can slightly vary, with testers inspecting the condition of the battery and other electrical components.

Nevertheless, no matter the age, brand or type of vehicle, Wessex Fleet recommends that all motorists make sure that their car is regularly serviced.

Set by the manufacturer, most vehicles are required to undergo a regular service around once per year, with more significant work, such as changing filters and brake pads, after two to three years.

Drivers are able to see when they need to get their vehicle serviced by looking in the owner’s manual or looking for an orange spanner on the dashboard.
