The sixth and expectedly final body was recovered Tuesday from the site where a 213-million-pound cargo ship destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26.
Maryland state authorities and the FBI identified the victim as 37-year-old construction worker José Mynor López from Baltimore. He had moved to the U.S. from Guatemala, according to The Associated Press.
Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., the superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police, recognized Tuesday as a sad day that brings some closure to a tragic accident.
“With heavy hearts, today marks a significant milestone in our recovery efforts and providing closure to the loved ones of the six workers who lost their lives in this tragic event,” Butler said.
Six people were presumed dead after the container ship Dali seemingly lost power and the brought down the heavily trafficked steel bridge hanging over the Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbor in Maryland.
The other workers killed in that early morning collision were Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, Carlos Daniel Hernandez Estrella, Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez and Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval.
Recovery crews struggled to find the victims due to debris from the wrecked bridge that had fallen into the water below.
The Dali remains unable to move amid the wreckage. A controlled demolition of what’s left of the bridge is expected to set that ship free in the coming days.
