This week The Rolling Stones headlined the New Orleans Jazz Festival, having originally cancelled back in 2019 so that Sir Mick Jagger could undergo heart surgery.
During the set, in which they performed a track live for the first time in 25 years, the 80-year-old singer took a swipe at Louisiana governor Jeff Landry, who was watching the show in the audience.
Before assuming office in January, as the state’s top lawyer, he supported an abortion ban, advocated for prayer in public schools and challenged the Democrat governor John Bel Edwards on LGBT issues.
The Republican politician also recently signed a bill expanding state execution methods including electrocution and nitrogen gassing.
According to Rolling Stone, Jagger told the audience at the concert: “We’re a welcoming crowd, aren’t we? I hope Mr. Landry is enjoying the show. He’s real inclusive, you know. He’s trying to take us back to the Stone Age.”
Landry later tweeted: “You can’t always get what you want. The only person who might remember the Stone Age is Mick Jagger. Love you buddy, you’re always welcome in Louisiana!”
