An 18-year-old woman who was shot dead at Delaware State University was identified Monday as Camay Mitchell DeSilva.
Cops said DeSilva, a Wilmington resident, was visiting a friend on the campus in Dover, the Delaware News Journal reported. No one else was wounded in the shooting, and no suspects have been arrested or publicly identified.
Police responded to a shots fired call at the university around 1:40 a.m. Sunday. Officers arrived at a location near Warren-Franklin Residence Hall and found DeSilva suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.
DeSilva was rushed to a Dover hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.
“The DSU Police Department and staff will continue to take all necessary actions to ensure the health and well-being of our campus community,” Delaware State police said. Police have not publicly speculated on a possible motive for the shooting.
Delaware State closed its campus on Sunday, and classes were canceled Monday but scheduled to resume Tuesday.
“First, let me say that whoever believes that settling disagreements of any kind should be met with physical violence — including the threat of and eventual use of firearms — is simply not welcomed here,” Delaware State President Tony Allen said.
“Delaware State University is an institution of significant historical and contemporary importance to our community and our country. It is not a place to harbor those who have no respect for these hallowed, sacred grounds.”
Police said DeSilva and “possibly another non-student female” were visiting a Delaware State student, according to the News Journal. Dover police said the suspect or suspects were spotted sprinting away from the scene, but no description has been released.
