New petrol and diesel fuel compound could be 'alternative' to electric cars

TopSpeed said: “While EVs offer significant environmental benefits, they require significant infrastructure development and come with a host of trade-offs.

“In this context, e-fuels present a compelling alternative. These synthetic fuels offer a way to reduce emissions while still leveraging existing internal combustion engine (ICE) technology.”

Synthetic fuels can only be purchased in the UK from a limited number of outlets making it harder to access.

However, synthetic fuels are already being rolled out in some areas in Europe with others likely to follow if it’s successful.

Some manufacturers have already bitten the bullet and have funded research into synthetic fuel development.

Porsche is one of the leaders in the technology and has a specialist plant in Chile producing compounds.

Other major brands such as Audi and BMW are also investing heavily in synthetic fuel development.

TopSpeed added: “Unlike electric vehicles (EVs), which require extensive infrastructure and new technology, e-fuels can power existing vehicles without modification.

“This makes them a practical solution for preserving millions of cars already on the road, including beloved classics.”

It’s not just cars which could benefit from synthetic fuels with petrol station forecourt operators also likely to feel a boost.

Sustainable fuel would not require swathes of new charging stations to be installed like has become the case with electric vehicles.

Cinch explained: “Unlike the electric car boom that’s creating the need for charging stations to be set up across the country, there is an existing infrastructure already in place to dispense these new types of fuel.”
