30-minute activity can ward off feelings of depression, expert says

From the start of autumn, a third of people in the UK will find themselves suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) according to research from wellness company YorkTest, with symptoms including feelings of despair and anxiety. But regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of developing depression by up to 30%, according to the Mental Health Foundation. The exercise can be as simple as a short 10-minute brisk walk.

Gavin Cowper, exercise expert and owner of Exersci, has outlined five easy 30-minute exercises to fit into your week to help ease symptoms of seasonal depression. Gavin said: “Many people are excited for autumn but as the days grow shorter and nights grow longer, those with seasonal affective disorder may struggle with their mental health.”

“Fortunately, simple 30-minute exercises can help alleviate the symptoms of SAD. Staying active not only improves your mood but also boosts your self-esteem, which can have a positive effect on your overall well-being.”
