20p hack for descaling your kettle – and it's not white vinegar

There are numerous ways to descale your kettle, from cleaning products made specifically for this task to the trusty white vinegar, but there’s one method that is much cheaper than these options.

The average price for one lemon is just 20p, making it the perfect choice for cleaning your kettle – and you may already have a few in your home, meaning this hack will cost you nothing at all.

The hack was shared online by Lynsey Crombie, known on social media as Lynsey Queen of Clean. Posting this hack on Facebook, she wrote: “Descaling my kettle with lemons is one of my favourite tips.

“Years ago I had a terrible accident with a descaling product and I will never ever use a chemical in my kettle again; instead, these days I either use lemons, citric acid, or white vinegar. All of these do a wonderful job.”

In a video, Lynsey then revealed her method for descaling with a lemon. The first step of which is to half fill your kettle with cold water.

Then chop your lemons in half and squeeze some of the juice into the kettle, before dropping both lemon halves into the kettle.

Then boil the kettle and let the lemon water sit for 15 minutes before pouring the water down the sink. Then repeat the above steps, this time just with regular water.

After which you can then use the lemons to clean the exterior of the kettle too.

Fans were quick to comment on the video, with one writing: “I always use lemons to descale my kettle. Used to use vinegar but hated the smell that lingered.”

Another added: “Might give this a go, been scared of using chemicals since I swollowed a mouthful (don’t ask, don’t open things with my mouth anymore).”

While a third shared their own method for descaling their kettle, adding: “I use white vinegar with a splash of water, boil the kettle then leave it overnight. Sparkling new again in the morning – just be sure to rinse kettle a few times before use.”
